Systematic speleological and biospeleological research started as part of the Project "Biodiversity of subterranean fauna of Karlovac County" , financed by the EU. Croatian Biospeleological Society organized it, and members of the PD Vrlovka, SK Ursus spelaeus, SD Karlovac and SO PDS Velebit participated. First systematic research was held on wider region of the Town of Ogulin and Krnjak in period from 11th till 15th February 2009. Four speleological localities were visited with the main objective to gather foto and video material. Finding of tiny coleopteran of genus Machaerites is the most interesting of all collected material. Scientific analyses of the specimens are underway.
The research on Kamanje and Lipnik areas were held in period from 17th till 21st March 2009. Twelve speleological localities were visited, which included exceptionally interested cave Vrlovka. Three objects are topographically surveyed, and all twelve are biospeleologically explored. Very interesting findings of cave fauna are found and scientific analyses are underway. Among at least 25 different species the most interesting are amphipods of the genus Niphargus, several species of springtails, numerous pseudoscorpions and tiny coleopteran of genus Machaerites, probably new species for science. The bat fauna was explored in cave Vrlovka and four bat species were registered. The research will continue in May, June and September.
