Finished field research for Project "Biodiversity of subterranean fauna of Karlovac County"

20.09.2009.

Biospeleological research as part of the Project "Biodiversity of subterranean fauna of Karlovac County", financed by the EU has finished. 25 speleological objects were systematically explored and 38 more were visited. In Kamanje region 11 objects were explored and in Ogulin region 52 objects. All visited objects were biospeleologically examined, and microclimate parameters were measured. In 15 speleological objects cave divers were diving. 6 new speleological objects were researched, and 8 new objects speleodivers explored for the firs time or they explored some new submerged channels. Among that 5 objects were topographically surveyed. One submerged object was also topographically surveyed. During the exploration speleological objects were photographed and filmed, on land and underwater. A lot of great scenes of cave fauna were captured with video camera and digital cameras.

A lot of biological samples were collected during research. The material is deposited in the Collection of the Croatian Biospeleological Society. The most interesting findings are new species for science, which will represent new endemic species for these regions after being described. In Ogulin region new species of centipede is found (Lithobius n. sp.), false scorpion (Chthonius n. sp.), water louse (Monolistra n. sp.), springtail (Pararrhopalites n. sp.) and millipede from order Chordeumatida. In Kamanje region new species of beetle is found (Machaerites n. sp.).
