Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the exploration of the Jama kod Rašpor and commemorating the deaths of Blaž and Karlo Božić
100 years ago, on August 25, 1925, speleologists from Trieste embarked on the exploration of the Jama kod Rašpora (on Ćićarija). They reached a depth of 450 m, making the cave the deepest in the world at the time!
Unfortunately, the celebration was cut short by a tragic event: a sudden flash flood caused by a pan-European storm claimed the lives of local helpers Blaž and Karlo Božić, and the entire expedition became a symbol of speleological courage, but also a reminder of the ruthlessness of nature.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, more than 60 people from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia gathered on August 23 and 24, 2025. A memorial to Blaž and Karlo Božić was erected in front of the cemetery in Rašpor, and the next day an exhibition of documents, equipment and photographs testifying to the 100th anniversary of the exploration of this impressive cave was opened in the Baredine cave, and a book on the same topic was announced.
