Speleothemes as witnesses to past climate change

Hear about this interesting topic from Iva Palatinuš, mag. geol. on Monday 10.2.2025. from 7 PM in the premises of the MO Savski kuti, Lomnička 3, Zagreb.
Here’s what Iva says about the topic:
Speleothemes are secondary carbonate cave sediments that represent a valuable data source for the reconstruction of past climate conditions because they can record climate parameters from the period of their growth. Information about natural climate variability is preserved in the form of (geo)chemical and physical characteristics that are the result of a number of different processes that occur on the surface and within the cave itself. These processes, and the way in which speleothems record climate conditions, will be explained using the example of speleothem from Nova Grgosova špilja near Samobor.
