A synthesis of cave-dwelling spiders in Europe

Recently, an article about cave-dwelling spiders in Europe has been published. The authors provide the first overview of spiders living in subterranean habitats in Europe with the first European subterranean spider checklist.

In Europe, there are 195 troglobiont and 291 troglophile species, within 92 genera and 22 families. Although, a few species colonized caves across the whole continent, about 90% of European cave spiders have narrow areas of distribution and have so far been recorded in just one country. The variety of cavernous spiders is unevenly distributed, and the biodiversity center is located in southern Europe.
