Life under the City – The secret life of the Dubrovnik underground

We visited Dubrovnik-Neretva County in the far south of Croatia. The reason for visiting was our educational project “Life beneath the city – the secret underground life of the Dubrovnik area” financed by the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. We visited three elementary schools in Orašac, Čilipi and Slano. In all three schools, we gave lectures to students from 1st to 8th grade where we talked about the subterranean world, which animals live there, and their adaptations, why are we as cavers and biologists interested in the underground, and what we do there. Towards the end of the lecture, we tried to spread the idea of protecting subterranean habitats, especially because these are the future decision-makers.

After the lecture students could examine real specimens of subterranean fauna, learn to recognize different taxa, and investigate the equipment we use in caves.

Part of our project was a public workshop called “Cave animals night” where attendants could learn more about that subject.

Also, with the elementary school from Čilipi we visited cave Đurovića špilja in Čilipi, where they witnessed the beauty and secrecy of the underground world under their feet.
